Kendall P. Shumway, DPM, completed undergraduate work at Brigham Young University and then went on to Podiatry School at the California College of Podiatric Medicine in San Francisco. He spent his fourth year in San Antonio at the University of Texas, which is known internationally for its excellence in Diabetic Foot Care. After graduation, he completed a residency in General Podiatry and Foot Surgery at the Veterans Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. Dr. Shumway is originally from Northern Arizona, right between the Apache and Navajo Indian Reservations. He enjoys time with his family and the outdoors.

Claudia Magaña is the Diabetes Program Administrative Assistant/ Healthy Heart Data Coordinator and joined the Diabetes Team in 2004. She provides a variety of administrative services for the Diabetes Program and Health Heart Program. She coordinates key components of the Diabetes Program and Healthy Heart Program activities, including education classes, clinics, patient appointments, health fairs, conferences, and other events. Claudia has a great interest in promoting health in the Native American community.

Angella joined the Diabetes Team in May 2011 as a Diabetes Educator/Case Manager. She completed the Vocational Nursing program at Chaffey College, the Associate’s degree in nursing from West Coast University and the Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) at Vanguard University. She gained her nursing experience working with a number of health institutions providing a wide range of service including caring for medical, surgical and hospice patients. Angella also comes to the team with extensive hands-on experience in teaching, food science, food preparation, and culinary management. She is dedicated to providing individuals with the tools, training, and support necessary to change their behavior and accomplish their diabetes self-management goals. Angella was recently accepted to Teachers College, Columbia University where she will pursue a Master of Science in Diabetes Education and Management.

Lindsay is from north central Texas and grew up enjoying a wide variety of athletics, namely gymnastics. Her passion for nutritional developed in academy when she realized she wanted to work as a health educator. She attended Southwestern Adventist University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in wellness. Shortly after, she moved to Southern California to study nutrition at Loma Linda University where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree as well as a master’s degree in nutrition and dietetics. She is certified by the Commission on Dietetic Registration as a registered dietitian and has worked with RSBCIHI since 2012.
Lindsay’s nutrition specialties include: diabetes education, whole person wellness care, lifestyle coaching, lactation education, cooking demonstrations, weight loss management, and nutrition writing. For recreation Lindsay enjoys hiking, swing dancing, crafting, cooking, and hosting dinner parties.

Hello, my name is Yvonne pleased to meet you. I am an LVN, with an AS from RCC and have worked for hospitals like Kaiser and Loma Linda. Since I began my career in 1993, I have had the chance to advance and learn as secretary, CNA, mobility tech, and LVN. At this company as the Tele-Medicine Coordinator, I have a great opportunity to flourish and contribute to the programs’ success using all the skills I have accumulated thus far. Cheri is a Diabetes Program Fitness Specialist and Zumba Instructor. She also organizes RSBCIHI’s commercial tobacco prevention program. Before joining the team, she was a personal trainer at LA Fitness and a wellness clinic assistant at the Drayson Center Wellness Clinic. She completed a Masters of Science in Physiology and a Masters of Public Health with an emphasis in Lifestyle Management at Loma Linda University. Her passion is using fitness, nutrition, weight management, stress management, and tobacco prevention to help her patients to prevent chronic disease and improve health. She believes that “Exercise is Medicine” and likes helping people to find activities they enjoy to reduce their risk for illness and improve their quality of life.

Kris is one of the Diabetes Program Fitness Specialists. He joined the Diabetes Program in 2010 and has helped implement multiple exercise programs focused on making wellness fun. He completed his Bachelor of Exercise Science degree at La Sierra University and his Masters in Kinesiology at California Baptist University. He maintains two certifications through the American College of Sports Medicine and has used his work experiences to help develop exercise policies and procedures at RSBCIHI. While working for the company Physiotherapy, he conducted health screenings to measure client’s level of fitness, including items such as mobility, strength, and blood pressure and has worked as a personal trainer for LA Fitness. Kris is originally from Maryland, and has family ties to the Nanticoke Indians.
Octavio Lopez | ext. 1153
Octavio Lopez is the Diabetes Program MMU Driver/ Community Educator. He joined the team in 2016. Octavio’s interest is in educating the Native American community. He will be driving the Medical Mobile Unit to different sites and will also be doing eye screening for the diabetes program and helping patients in the Native American community in any way possible. Octavio is so excited to be a part of the diabetes team. He’s also excited to be a part of such a helpful group of willing people.
Case Manager/Diabetes Educator: Holly Brawner, MPH, CHES, NCMA, joined the Diabetes program in May 2017. Holly’s diabetes experience started working as a medical assistant in a busy Endocrine clinic. Holly completed her bachelor’s in health science and her master’s in public health both from Kaplan University. Holly became a Certified Health Education Specialist in May 2017. Holly specializes in diabetes technology. She is a certified pump trainer through Insulet Corporation and trainer for Dexcom. Holly’s duties at RSBCIHI include patient education for both individual and groups, case management and chronic care management. Holly is currently pursuing her DrPH from Walden University.
